If you’re over 40 and are experiencing the onset of presbyopia, or more commonly known as the need for reading glasses, you’re not alone. Everyone experiences it over the age of 40, regardless of how good their prior vision was.

As we age, the lens of our eye become more rigid, and therefore cannot flex as well as before. This results in the all-too-common ‘squinting,’ and arm lengthening needed to focus on objects up close. Eventually, you will need reading glasses to see these items clearly.

Fortunately, there now are options that safely and permanently restore your vision at all distances, and effectively eliminates your need for glasses.

PRELEX, or presbyopic lens exchange, is a procedure that is identical to cataract surgery, where the natural lens of your eye is removed and replaced with a special type of ‘premium’ artificial intraocular lens (IOL). One type of IOL,called a ‘multifocal IOL,’ is engineered to provide near, intermediate, and far vision. Essentially, it is identical to wearing a permanent contact lens within your eye.

Another type of lens is called an "accomodating IOL," This lens is engineered to function like a normal healthy lens of the eye, essentially restoring the lens' flexibility, enabling you to focus on objects up close.

There is even a LASIK procedure called "monovision," where your dominant eye's vision is corrected to see things at a distance, and your recessive eye's vision corrected to see up close. This may sound uncomfortable but in reality it's the way we naturally see. Our brain balances out the difference to restore vision far and near!
