Advanced Intraocular Lens Options

At Rocky Mountain Ophthalmology we are proud to offer several intraocular lens (IOL) options for cataract surgery. These include traditional lens replacement that will require the need for glasses, or a selection of premium lens options which may allow you to be free from glasses.

TECNIS Multifocal

Tecnis IOLUntil recently, patients undergoing cataract surgery received a monofocal, or single focus IOL. Monofocal IOLs implanted in both eyes generally provide excellent distance vision, while patients often need spectacle correction for near and intermediate vision. In the late 1990s, Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) introduced its first multifocal IOL designed to provide multiple points of focus, thereby dramatically reducing the need for bifocals or trifocal glasses after surgery.

In January, 2009 Abbott Medical Optics (AMO) received FDA approval for their most advanced multifocal lens to date, the Tecnis Multifocal IOL.   The Tecnis multifocal lens is designed to provide patients with a full range of vision and greater independence from glasses or contact lenses than ever before. In fact, nearly 9 out of 10 patients who receive a Tecnis multifocal lens report never wearing glasses after the procedure, the highest level of glasses independence for any intraocular lens.

Crystalens AO IOL

CrystalensCrystalens® AO is a revolutionary new breakthrough in vision enhancement that Rocky Mountain Ophthalmology is now offering. It is the first and only intraocular lens (IOL) replacement that focuses like the eye's natural lens, allowing for continuous vision up close, far away and all distances in between.

Called an 'accomodating' lens, it is designed to similate the functionality of the natural lens of your eye.  As we age, we develop a condition called presbyopia in which the lens of our eye hardens and becomes less flexible.  THis is what causes the need for reading glasses.  The Crystalens AO, used in PRELEX procedures at RMO Colorado, effectively restores the youth and flexibility to your vision, thereby providing permanent vision correction at all distances.

Acrysof ®Toric IOL

Acrysof Aspheric Toric IOL – Single Focus Lens With Astigmatism Correction

Astigmatism is an eye condition that causes blurred or double vision due to an irregular shape of the cornea.  In people with astigmatism, their corneas are shaped more like a football than a basketball, and this prevents the light rays from focusing directly on the retina and blurring of the image occurs.

Fortunately, science has developed an advanced Intraocular Lens, called a Toric IOL, that can effectively eliminate any astigmatism present in a patient.  By replacing the natural lens of the eye, with an artificial Toric lens designed to counterbalance the astigmatism, clear vision can be obtained.
